SUGAR METER FOR WINE OR BEER

Indicator for measuring the sugar concentration in the must or wort expressed in Balling degrees.

MAIN ELEMENTS OF THE SUGAR METER
  • float (hydrometer) with the sugar concentration scale in degrees Blg,
  • test tube (plastic) - to take the measurement,
  • the sugar meter is calibrated at 20 ° C.
  • Size: 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 16.7 cm
TESTING THE MUST
To measure the sugar content, fill the test tube to 2/3 with must. The liquid should not contain solid particles and gas bubbles. The amount of liquid should be such that the sugar meter placed in the test tube can float freely and does not touch the bottom and walls of the test tube.
For ease of use, the ranges of the initial sugar concentrations in the must are marked with different colors on the scale for the different types of wines we wish to obtain:
  • maroon area (22-25 Blg °) - dessert wines (sweet),
  • yellow area (15-22 blg °) - table wines (dry),

Note:
For the fermentation to proceed smoothly, it is important that the sugar concentration is NOT higher than 22 to 25 µg °.
If you prefer very sweet wines, add sugar in several portions, for example on the 1st, 5th and 12th day of fermentation. The wine can also be sweetened after fermentation is complete.

BEER WORT TEST
The sugar content in the wort is measured in the same way as for brewing wine.
The range of recommended initial sugar concentrations in the wort is indicated on the scale in amber (8-10 µg °).
Beer wort fermentation is considered complete when the reading is within the green highlighted range (0-2 Blg °)
