Why is dirt not good for your solar panels?
Modern solar panels are made up of three internal groups of cells, also called “strings”. These three strings are linked together with a so-called “By-pass” diode. These diodes ensure that if one internal string produces less energy, it will be bridged.
For example, the solar panel will produce 1/3 less energy and the entire panel or system will not always fail. Because the by-pass diode bridges gradually and does not work as a switch, dirt in some brands of solar panels can have adverse effects on the energy production of the entire system.
The amount of light lost to pollution and the pollution depends on the situation and the environment.
How do I clean my solar panels?
And a heavy rain shower does NOT clean the panels. Only the loose dirt will wash to the bottom edge of the panel, creating an edge of dirt and algae that will accumulate between the glass and the aluminum frame. This “edge” of dirt ensures that the lower internal string can receive less light and will therefore produce less energy. This means that this string is put into by-pass and you lose 1/3rd of the energy yield.
Other dirt, particulate matter or bird droppings do not move to the bottom. Even by cleaning with osmosis water, the biofilm is not broken down. As a result, the pollution quickly returns.
TNO, University of Leuven and the Swiss Dr. H. Häberlin have shown that panels need to be cleaned for optimal results and efficiency.

Instructions
Preferably dilute concentrated BIOnyx Solar Panel Cleaner in lukewarm/warm water (1:1 to 1:3) in a nebulizer. Apply to a dry or slightly damp surface. Don't do anything else. First results visible after 2-3 days. Only use at temperatures between 5°C and 25°C. With little sunlight (early or late in the day, not in full sun) and when rain is expected < 24 hours. Repeat 2-3 times a year. Consumption: ± 50m² with 5 liters of diluted product depending on the contamination.
