The author
Reimer Strikwerda, farmer's son from the Frisian town of Winsum, was editor-in-chief of magazines in the field of cattle improvement, including the Veeteelt magazine. He has written a number of books on the history of cattle farming and artificial insemination in animals, such as A century of Friesian pedigree cattle (1979), Melkweg 2000 (1998), Revolution in the animal kingdom (2007) and Cows of Cows (2010).

The photographer

Jan Smit, small-scale keeper of farm animals in Welsum in Overijssel, specialized as an animal photographer, has developed a unique style. He shows the animal in his photography as it is, without any frills, without any effect. The natural behavior of animals in not always natural circumstances is strikingly captured.
